Popular digital content creator Murugi Munyi has sparked online conversation on baby naming trends, urging prospective parents to move beyond what she calls overused western names.

In a candid online post, Munyi reflected on the naming patterns of her own millennial generation, attributing the popularity of names like Ethan, Jayden and Michelle to mental colonization. We Millennials were having kids in our 20s. We were yet to be fully free of the colonizer’s grasp. We had yet to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery. That is why a lot of us named our kids Ethan, Jayden, Michelle,Munyi stated.

She further stated that from her children’s school, the volume of children sharing the same names are many. “In my kid’s class, there are many Jaden, Michelle and Ethan.” she explained, even revealing, “I even have an Ethan in my own house.”

Munyi issued a challenge to new parents. “If you are having a child in 2025, I don’t expect you to be naming your kids such names. You have the benefit of the internet. You have the benefit of ChatGPT and AI and Geminis,” Munyi said. “Now you have choice. Be creative.”
