OLYMPIC COMMITTEE TO BAN TRANSGENDER WOMEN FROM FEMALE EVENTS
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is getting closer to stopping transgender women from competing in women’s sports at the Olympics.
The president of the IOC, Kirsty Coventry, promised to create this new rule when she was elected. She formed a special group to study how to protect women’s sports.
Right now, the IOC says they are still talking about it and have not made a final decision. However, a report from their medical chief, a ban will likely be announced in 2026.
The report said that athletes who went through male puberty keep certain physical advantages, even after medical treatment. It is less clear if the rules will also change for athletes with a rare genetic condition known as DSD. This new plan would be a big change. Until now, the IOC let each sport like swimming or athletics make its own rules. Many sports allowed transgender women to compete if they lowered their testosterone.
A total ban is not expected to be ready for the 2026 Winter Olympics, but it could be in place for the 2028 Summer Games. In recent years, many sports have made similar rules, arguing it is about fairness in competition. Trans rights groups disagree, saying these bans are unfair and that including everyone should be the main goal.
