Nairobi played host to the Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit 2025 at the Mövenpick Hotel, an event organised by Safaricom. Under the theme Powering Progress Securing Growth, the event brought together a diverse group of business leaders, government officials, regulators and technology specialists to strategies on Kenya’s defences against a surge in cyber attacks.

Recent data from the National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team Coordination Centre (National KE-CIRT/CC) revealed a detection of more than 2.5 billion cyber threat events in just the first quarter of 2025, indicating a sharp rise. Key sectors like finance, healthcare, energy and government services remain prime targets for phishing scams, ransomware and major system disruptions.

Cybercrime is a challenge that no single institution can solve alone. As more Kenyans embrace digital tools, the responsibility to keep them safe becomes greater. This summit provides a platform for government, private sector, and civil society to collaborate and ensure that Kenya’s digital growth is anchored on trust and resilience,” said Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO.

The event’s agenda was packed with keynote addresses, expert panel debates, practical training workshops, and interactive demonstrations of the latest security technologies. These sessions provided leaders, IT experts, and entrepreneurs with strategies for system protection while highlighting the need for inclusive and accessible digital security measures.

This year’s summit aligns with Safaricom’s 25th-anniversary celebrations, commemorating a quarter-century of transforming lives. The company has expanded from a base of 17,000 subscribers in 2000 to serving more than 60 million customers across Kenya and Ethiopia, championing inclusive access to communication, financial services, and technology.
