AWARD-WINNING TV PRODUCER APPIE MATERE PASSES AWAY
The Kenyan and African film industry is in mourning following the passing of acclaimed film and television producer Appie Matere.
A visionary force in storytelling, Matere’s death marks a loss for the creative community she helped build and elevate over a career spanning more than two decades.
Matere was the founder and creative engine behind Zamaradi Productions, a pioneering independent studio renowned for its commitment to authentic African narratives.
She was instrumental in shaping the modern landscape of Kenyan screen content, moving seamlessly between influential feature films, award-winning short films, documentaries, and long-form television drama.
Her work garnered critical acclaim and brought Kenyan stories to the world stage. Among her notable achievements: Killer Necklace: Won Best Short Film and Best Director at Kenya’s Kalasha Awards and screened at the prestigious New York African Film Festival. Headlines in History: Secured the Kalasha Award for Best Feature Documentary.
Kona co-produced the widely popular Kenyan telenovela that became a staple on M-Net’s Africa Magic channel, captivating audiences across the continent.
Appie was celebrated as a generous mentor and a passionate advocate for the growth of the local film industry. She dedicated herself to nurturing new talent through training initiatives and masterclasses, ensuring her legacy would extend through the careers of countless filmmakers she inspired.
The Kenya Film Commission mourned the TV producer, “Appie’s work extended beyond Kenya’s borders through international collaborations that positioned Kenyan narratives on the global stage and earned recognition at major international film festivals.
Beyond her creative achievements, Appie Matere was a mentor and advocate for industry growth. She shared her knowledge through training initiatives and masterclasses, creating opportunities for countless emerging filmmakers.” The statement read.
