The mother of the late gospel singer Betty Bayo has formally requested a state inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s passing.

Bayo died on November 10, 2025, while undergoing care at Kenyatta National Hospital. At the time of her death, a family spokesperson, accompanied by the singer’s husband, Hiram Gitau, publicly attributed her death to leukaemia.

In a recent development, the singer’s mother, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, has submitted a formal petition to the Director of Public Prosecutions calling for an official inquest. In documents filed by Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, Wairimu said the family’s belief that foul play may have been involved in the death of the 11th Hour performer.

She says that Bayo had shown no signs of illness and that herdeath was sudden and unexplained. The petition also mentions that following her passing, the family was refused access to the autopsy report and claims theburial was conducted hastily, potentially obscuring details related to her demise.

Wairimu further states that the family was unable to obtain medical records or clear information regarding the treatment Bayo received. The letter to the DPP urges the Inspector General to launch an inquest into the death of the gospel singer.
