The Kenyan film and theatre community is in mourning  the death of actor Bilal Wanjau Ibrahim. Best known for his role in the performances in popular shows like BUS 338, Tahidi High and Njoro wa Uba, Wanjau’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tribute from fellow actors and fans.

Details of his final days, shared by close friend and actress Sandra Dacha, reveal a year-long struggle with a persistent leg wound complicated by a diabetes condition. According to Dacha, what began as a small wound a year ago failed to heal properly due to his underlying health issues, often requiring him to use a crutch.

His condition worsened last Sunday in Machakos when he experienced difficulty breathing and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital. Medical teams stabilised him, noting hisblood sugar levels were critically high at 11, far above the normal range of3-4. Despite efforts, he succumbed to the illness on Thursday night.

Wanjau is remembered as a generous mentor who shaped careers. The actress recounted how he discovered her potential in 2010 at an organisation in Eastleigh and immediately connected her with Planet Theatre, launching her acting career through set book performances. “He played a major role in my life… the rest is history,” Dacha shared. “Rest in peace Bilal Wanjau.”

Fellow actor Sarah Ndanu, who co-starred with Wanjau in BUS 338, also paid tribute. “We have lost one of our own… Bilal had a light that filled every room. His warmth, kindness and generosity of spirit touched everyone who worked with him,” she said. “Thank you, Bilal, for sharing your talent with us… for the unforgettable mark you left on our film and our lives.”
