NAIROBI COUNTY GOVERNMENT APPROVES MONTHLY MENSTRUAL LEAVE FOR EMPLOYEES

The Nairobi County Government has officially approved a pioneering workplace policy, granting women employees up to two days of leave per month for menstrual health needs.

The policy was confirmed during a recent cabinet meeting led by governor Johnson Sakaja, stating the county’s commitment to inclusive governance. The move recognises that menstrual health, particularly conditions such as dysmenorrhea (severe menstrual pain), affects the wellbeing and professional output of a large portion of the workforce.

Research indicates that between 65 percent of women experience menstrual discomfort, with many facing symptoms severe enough to hinder daily performance. With women comprisingover half of Nairobi County’s employees, unaddressed menstrual health has historically contributed to reduced productivity and increased absenteeism.

Previously, existing HR policies did not formally accommodate menstrual health, often requiring women to work through illness. The newly adopted “Menstrual Health Days policy closes this gap by providing a dignified and supportive option without imposing extra financial costs on the county administration.

A cabinet memorandum noted that the policy is grounded in research and aligns with the county’s goals for gender equity, dignified work conditions, and effective governance. It further highlighted that even a modest recovery in productivity would bring meaningful institutional benefits.

Rollout of the policy will be managed by the Public Service Management division in partnership with the County Public Service Board. Implementation will include clear guidelines, staff sensitisation programs, and integration into existing employee wellness and performance monitoring systems.

Safeguards will ensure confidentiality, protect employees’ privacy, and prevent any negative impact on performance evaluations. Operational continuity in essential services will be maintained through flexible arrangements such as shift swaps and relief staffing.
