OBURU TALKS ABOUT HIS SISTER’S TURBULENT MARRIAGE TO OTIENO AMBALA 

Senator Oburu Oginga has disclosed the private efforts he and his brother, the late Raila Odinga, made to stabilise their sister’s troubled first marriage.

Speaking at the requiem mass for Beryl Achieng’ Odinga, the senator described his sister’s union with Otieno Ambala as turbulent. The marriage began while Achieng’ was a student at the University of Nairobi. “Their marriage was a bit turbulent, and me and my brother, late brother Raila, we had to come in so many times to bring peace between them,” the Senator recounted. 

Despite their repeated interventions as family mediators, the relationship could not be salvaged. “It appears our efforts could not work much. So they ended up in a divorce.”

The union with Otieno produced two children, Chizi and Auma. After the divorce, Beryl relocated to Zimbabwe, where she remarried and had another child, Tairei.
