‘SHE BELIEVED IN ME’ PASCAL TOKODI MOURNS THE LOSS OF TV PRODUCER APPIE MATERE
Award-winning Kenyan actor Pascal Tokodi is mourning the loss of his close friend, mentor, and celebrated television producer, Appie Matere, who passed away over the weekend.
In a tribute, Tokodi reflected on the role Matere played in his career and personal life. He first met her as a young man of 20, eager yet uncertain about his path in film. “Appie took me in,” Tokodi shared. “She listened to me, believed in me, and gave me a job on the spot.”
That opportunity was a job with the African Magic Original Films (AMOF) project, where Tokodi worked on 60 films. He credits this experience as his “crash course in filmmaking,” a foundation that shaped the artist he is today.
Matere also offered him personal support. He recalled her presence during difficult times, including moments of online attacks. “When things got loud, she would call me, talk to me, and lift me up. She was kind like that,” he stated.
The actor says that Matere’s impact extended far beyond his own journey. She was a cornerstone of the Kenyan film industry, renowned for creating opportunities, nurturing emerging talent, and championing authentic Kenyan stories. “Many of us are here because she opened doors and believed in us before we were fully ready,” he noted.
“Appie was a good person and she fought hard,” Tokodi expressed. “Thank you, Mama, for the doors you opened, the lessons you gave, the humanity you showed me, the belief, the kindness, and the legacy you leave behind in our industry and in our lives. I will always be grateful.”
