AFCON 2025: DAVIDO LOSES SH6.5 MILLION BET AFTER NIGERIA’S LOSS TO MOROCCO
Nigerian Afrobeats icon Davido, born David Adeleke, faced financial loss after a high-value wager on Nigeria’s national football team failed.
The singer had placed a bet through the crypto-based platform Stake, backing the Super Eagles to advance past Morocco in the semi-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The crucial match, held on January 14, 2026, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, concluded with a 0-0 draw after regular time. Morocco ultimately triumphed 4-2 in a penalty shootout, ending Nigeria’s tournament run and nullifying Davido’s bet.
Prior to the match, the artist shared a screenshot of his bet slip on social media, revealing a stake of $50,000 equivalent to approximately KSh6.5 million. The parlay bet required Nigeria to secure a victory within the 90-minute period, for both teams to score, and for the total goals in the match to exceed 1.5.
None of these conditions were met in the tightly contested goalless draw, resulting in the loss of his full stake. Had his predictions been correct, the bet with odds of 6.97 would have yielded a potential return of over $348,000 (roughly KSh45.3 million).
Morocco’s victory secured their place in the final against Senegal, while Nigeria’s elimination was sealed during the penalty shootout.
