DCI RULES OUT FOUL PLAY IN DEATH OF POLITICIAN CYRUS JIRONGO
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has concluded that the death of politician Cyrus Jirongo was a tragic road accident, finding no indications of foul play.
In a statement released on Monday, January 5, 2026, the DCI detailed its findings from a multi-disciplinary investigation launched after Jirongo’s death on the night of December 13, 2025. The incident occurred at the Karai area along the busy Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
According to the DCI, the investigative team comprising homicide detectives, intelligence experts and forensic specialists conducted a thorough probe. They processed the scene, secured key exhibits, and analysed CCTV footage recovered from the nearby Eagol Petrol Station. The team also obtained the bus manifest, amateur videos from the scene, and recorded statements from multiple key witnesses.
Witnesses included the deceased’s wife, Mrs. Ann Lanoi Pertet; the driver and conductor of the ill-fated bus; and several passengers. Notably, political figures including Moses Wetang’ula, Mr. Rebman Malala andMr. Ibrahim Sambuli, who had met with Jirongo at the Karen Oasis restaurant the evening before the accident, voluntarily provided their accounts to investigators.
“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the DCI stated.
The investigative file will now be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for final directions. The DCI indicated that potential criminal charges may be pursued against the bus driver, contingent on the evidence.
The DCI extended its deepest condolences to the family, relatives, and friends of the late Jirongo. The statement also urged the public and political leaders to refrain from speculative comments that could prejudice the process or cause public anxiety.
