SAFARICOM HONOURED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSPARENCY BY GLOBAL DISCLOSURE BODY
Safaricom has earned a prominent position on the prestigious CDP ‘A-List,‘ marking its recognition for a second consecutive year as a global leader in climate change transparency.
This achievement hi lights the telecommunications company’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and rigorous public disclosure. The ‘A-List’ distinction is highly selective, awarded to only a select percentage of companies worldwide that demonstrate superior environmental transparency through the CDP’s global disclosure system.
The framework aids organisations in measuring, managing, and openly reporting their environmental impact. In its 2025 Sustainable Business Report, Safaricom highlights how digital innovation is enhancing its environmental tracking. The deployment of new greenhouse gas data management tools and integrated AI dashboards has significantly improved data quality, enabling more accurate reporting.
CEO Peter Ndegwa attributed this recognition to the company’s disciplined reporting standards and concrete environmental actions. “At Safaricom, we adhere to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and S2 and the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) frameworks for our climate reporting, which has proved effective and has resulted in our positive listing,” he stated.
“We introduced an internal carbon pricing mechanism and we continue to drive our reforestation efforts by planting over 2.3 million trees which has contributed to the offsetting of residual emissions. Our sustainability-linked loan should contribute to our ESG agenda, most notably, being net-zero by 2050.”
The company’s roadmap to becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2050 is a central pillar of its strategy. Recent progress includes solarizing 1,432 base stations, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, a key milestone documented in its latest sustainability report. “This recognition on CDP’s ‘A-List’ reflects our quest for disclosure and action as we look forward to being Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company,” added Ndegwa.
“The role of innovation is pivotal to accelerate our environmental agenda and disclosures and not only drive green energy but also affect communities in a positive way by mitigating climate change.”
Safaricom has outlined ambitious targets. These include powering 5,000 sites with solar energy and sourcing 95% of its network power from renewables by 2030. The company also plans to plant 5 million trees across over 5,000 hectares and decarbonise its supply chain by partnering with more eco-friendly suppliers.
