FRIDAH MWAKA EDUCATES WOMEN ON THE HIDDEN MEANINGS OF WAIST BEADS
Renowned TV presenter Fridah Mwaka is sparking conversations online after offering a deep dive into the cultural significance of waist beads, challenging modern interpretations and calling for a return to tradition.
Speaking in an interview, Mwaka explained that while waist beads are often worn today as a fashion statement, they carry meaning particularly for married women.
“My waist beads are for beauty, but when you become an adult as a woman, they have a message,” Mwaka shared.
According to the presenter, the colours of the beads serve as a silent communication system between a woman and her partner: Red: Indicates that a woman is on her period. White: Signals that she is ready and clean. Multi-colored: Means she is feeling herself. Black: A clear message to “stay away, not today.“
Mwaka also said that this is precisely why waist beads are traditionally meant to remain concealed. “That’s why waist beads are not supposed to be seen anyhow,” she stated. “Nairobi women are wearing the waist beads badly. It’s for private beauty.”
She stressed that beyond aesthetics, the beads are a vessel for heritage and discretion. “I will never miss wearing waist beads, but it’s not for other people to see. It’s for tradition and communication. You don’t have to say everything.”
In addition to their symbolic role, she noted the practical function of waist beads as a weight management tool. “There is another for monitoring the waist. When you find it’s tight, you know you have gained weight,” she explained.
