On this year’s World Radio Day, media personality Janet Mbugua is taking her followers down memory lane sharing her beginnings in a tiny radio studio and the magic that started it all.

In a social media post marking the day, Mbugua opened up about her entry into radio as a 19-year-old in 2003, knocking on doors until one finally opened at Capital FM a station she had grown up listening to. “First, don’t laugh! 😄 This was 2003 and I was 19… yeah, anyway!” she shared.

I had the guts to knock on doors and somehow found myself working at one of the stations I grew up listening to – Capital FM. Suddenly I was in a tiny studio, pretending I knew which buttons to press and praying nothing embarrassing went on air. Sometimes it still did!

What began as a leap of faith became a training ground. Mbugua credits radio with building her confidence, sharpening her ability to think on her feet, and revealing the quiet power of conversation.

Radio became my real training ground. It built my confidence, sharpened my thinking, and showed me how powerful simple conversations can be when you know someone out there is listening,” she said. “It also opened the door to the media journey I’m still on today 🙏🏾.”

Now a celebrated media personality, author, and women’s rights advocate, Mbugua’s career trajectory is a testament to the power of radio. “Looking at these photos feels like catching up with an old friend,” she added. “Grateful for where it all began, and for the magic of radio that still keeps us company every day 📻.”
