LILIAN NG’ANG’A CALLS FOR INSTALLATION OF CCTVS IN CLASSROOMS AND SCHOOL BUSES
Former Machakos First Lady, Lilian Ng’ang’a has call for enhanced safety and transparency in Kenya’s schools, seeking the installation of CCTV cameras in classrooms and school buses with live feed access granted to parents.
Speaking out on growing concerns, Ng’ang’a talked about the overlooked conditions in school transport andstudent facilities. “If you’re a parent whose child is picked up and dropped by the school bus, do you once in a while get into the bus to check its general condition?” she posed.
“Are the seat belts working? Are they even there? Sometimes I see kids sitting on top of each other, smaller kids sleeping without their belts on. Parents must be empowered to ensure basic safety.”
Ng’ang’a’s proposal extends beyond transportation. She advocates for a comprehensive surveillance system covering dormitories, play areas, dining halls, and classrooms, essentially the entire school environment where children spend their time. Under her vision, every parent would receive secure access to live camera feeds.
“Classrooms should have cameras, and every parent should have a link of course, if they want,” she explained. “You can log in anytime… at work, at home, on the road. You just want to see what’s going on in school. You can log in and see what the kids are being taught.”
The same would apply to school buses, where Ng’ang’a argues reckless driving is a serious concern. “I believe there should be a camera, and parents can log in and check. The way these school buses are driven, they’re worse than matatus, and we’ve had a few accidents here and there.”
The call is particularly towards boarding schools and parents of young children, who often grapple with anxiety over their child’s wellbeing away from home. “This is especially important if the kids are very young and in boarding school. Parents deserve peace of mind and direct insight into their children’s daily environment,” she concluded.
