NIKITA KERING TELLS A STORY OF HIGH SCHOOL LOVER IN NEW SONG

Kenyan artist Nikita Kering, has released her first single of the year Dilly Darling.

Produced by the fast-rising Kenyan beatmaker Cap, with additional work from Nase, the song finds the On Yah vocalist looking back on a high school romance. “Growing up, I watched a lot of Disney, Camp Rock, and High School Musical,” Nikita explains. “I wanted to tell the story of my high school lover in a way that captures that same feeling.”

Set against a minimalist instrumental built around gentle guitar strumming, her soulful vocals glide over the production with a bluesy elegance a signature style that has helped define her accomplished career. “I felt a pop ballad with just guitar would create the space for storytelling,” she continues, “so listeners could clearly hear and connect with the message.

The release comes after a year with only two official studio drops, Kama Hauna, featuring Kenyan rap stars Scar Mkadinali and Ndovu Kuu, and the Amapiano-flavored hit Pendana Nawe. Apart from these, Nikita has remained largely out of the spotlight while crafting new material for her fans. She also contributed the magnetic single Haina Pressure as the opening theme for MTV’s series Shuga Mashariki.

With Dilly Darling, Nikita returns in buoyant form, exploring themes of love, intimacy, and warmth elements that have become closely associated with her musical identity. “The song is about not wasting time and being available for someone who loves you,” she says of the title.

In primary school, teachers would tell us to stop ‘dilly-dallying’ to get moving and be prompt. That idea of urgency stuck with me. In the context of this song, being at the right place at the right time means when you call, I’ll follow your lead without hesitation. Dilly Darling plays with that phrase: it’s both a reminder not to delay and an affectionate name for someone I’d never keep waiting.”
