GOOGLE EXPANDS AI MODE TO 13 AFRICAN LANGUAGES INCLUDING KISWAHILI & SOMALI
Google has broadened the capabilities of its AI Overviews and AI Mode search features to accommodate 13 African languages.
This enhancement, which adds to the existing English support, allows a vast number of users throughout the continent, particularly in Kenya, to access, understand, and generate online content using their native tongues, including Kiswahili and Somali.
This development is a continuation of Google’s dedication to developing responsibleAI for its search engine. With AI Overviews, individuals in Kenya can receive instant, AI-crafted summaries in response to their search queries, complemented by reliable sources for further reading.
The AI Mode offers an even more interactive experience, enabling users to submit questions via text, voice, or images to obtain comprehensive and tailored answers in the language they are most comfortable with.
The selection of these 13 languages was driven by their significant and increasing search traffic across Africa, ensuring that this initial rollout of localised AI tools directly benefits active online communities in nations like Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
This move empowers local students, educators and business owners to move from passive awareness of AI to actively leveraging it to solve practical issues within their own environments.
The technical and cultural foundation for this expansion is informed by Google’s Waxal language project. This initiative combines sophisticated machine learning, scholarly linguistic analysis, and direct community input to enhance how AI systems process and produce African languages. “Waxal,” which translates to “to speak” in Wolof, perfectly captures the project’s mission to foster a more inclusive and culturally resonant digital space.
Integrating AI Overviews and AI Mode into these widely spoken Sub-Saharan languages represents a significant new chapter in this ongoing effort. It provides a diverse group of usersvfrom students and teachers to translators and entrepreneurs with the practical tools to apply AI technology to everyday challenges in their communities.
Users in Kenya can access these features by taking the following simple actions:
Launch the Google application on an Android or iOS device, either through the app itself or a mobile web browser. Select AI Mode from the available Search options. Enter a question by typing or speaking in their chosen language, for instance, Kiswahili or Somali.
The newly incorporated languages are: Kiswahili (Kenya, Tanzania), Somali (Somalia, Kenya), Afrikaans, Akan, Amharic, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, Afaan Oromoo, Sesotho, Setswana, Wolof, Yorùbá and isiZulu.
