Renowned Kenyan musician Vivian has sparked fresh conversation about faith, spirituality, and religion after sharing her beliefs.

Speaking in an interview, the artist who previously made headlines in August 2024 for her critical views on Christianity expanded on her spiritual journey, offering clarity on what she believes and why she has chosen to step away from the faith of her childhood.

I trust in God. I just don’t believe God is a white man in heaven, the way we were taught in Sunday School,” Vivian stated. “I also believe you can make your heaven here on earth. I don’t believe there is a heaven in the sky as we were told. No one has died and come back to confirm that.

In August 2024, she described Christianity as a system rooted in control and fear. At the time, the singer questioned the idea of basing one’s entire existence on a single text. “It is living your life, your whole existence, out of a book all your choices, everything about who you are, being determined by one book,” she said. “Someone can hate you, condemn you, ostracise you, belittle you, dehumanise you and justify all of these actions to this one book, which they call the holy book. That’s wrong.

The musician who attended Bible school and was previously in a relationship with a self-described “kingdom ambassador,” shared that her personal experiences led her to view certain religious structures as harmful. “The level of pain, manipulation, and control that is there can only lead you to your death,” she said. “So believe me when I tell you, Christianity is a cult.”

She also raised concerns about the portrayal of women within the faith. “The book makes women an afterthought. The man was created, and then the woman was created to serve the man yet it is the woman who creates and carries life in her body.”

Rather than rejecting spirituality entirely, the musician said her belief in a higher power rooted in connection, creativity, and the universe. “I believe in the power of our souls. I believe in the power of creation, in the power of creativity. I believe that we are a part of a bigger world, a big universe. We are all connected.

Vivian encouraged her followers to take ownership of their spiritual paths. “You and I must take power into our own hands. We must understand that we hold the power to be, to create, to expand, to grow, to elevate, to speak freedom, to speak light, to speak love.
