Politician and media personality Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has weighed in on the growing debate surrounding the use of the popular voter registration slogan “Niko Kadi,” stating that he does not believe any politician can be successfully sued for adopting the phrase.

Responding to questions from the public, Jalang’o offered his perspective on why the slogan which has gained widespread traction in voter mobilisation campaigns is fair game for politicians as the country heads toward the upcoming electoral cycle.

Somebody has asked me if politicians can be sued for using ‘Niko Kadi,‘” Jalang’o said. “I don’t think you can, and these are my reasons. First, it is not patented and not registered. Even if it was, it is a two-word slogan that is so hard to be registered. It’s like saying ‘Niko fiti’ or ‘Niko poa.‘”

The former radio presenter turned politician explained that the nature of political campaigns naturally leads to the adoption of popular phrases, especially those resonating with the electorate. “Politicians will definitely jump on this because every single vote counts for them,” he added. “They will not care who came out with this slogan.

Jalang’o, who serves as Lang’ata MP, used the opportunity to clarify the meaning behind the slogan, saying that being “Niko Kadi” does not equate to political allegiance.

If you are registered, people are registered, and they have become registered,” he explained. “Ukiwa kadi, it doesn’t mean that everyone who is registering to vote are on your side. Make sure you register as a voter, and whatever you do with this information is up to you.”
