Former Justice Minister and 2027 Presidential Aspirant Martha Karua has penned an emotional tribute to the victims of tragic helicopter crash in Nandi County, with special remembrance for the pilot she once trusted with her life.

The crash, which claimed six lives including that of MP Johana Ng’eno, has sent shockwaves across the nation. But for Karua, the loss is personal.

In a statement, Karua revealed that the pilot, George Were, was her assigned pilot during the 2022 Azimio presidential campaign a journey that took her across Kenya’s  challenging terrain. “George was my assigned pilot during the 2022 Azimio presidential campaign. He flew me across this country through long days, difficult terrain, and demanding schedules,” Karua wrote.

But it wasn’t just Were’s professional job that left an impression on the veteran politician. “George was patient. He had a sense of humour and made an effort to accommodate everyone around him, regardless of the circumstances, and he always had an encouraging word,” she shared.

It was during the difficult days of the campaign trail that Were’s words carried weight sometimes more than he may have realised. “On the difficult days of that campaign, those words mattered more than he may have known,Karua reflected.

What set Were apart, according to Karua, was something intangible yet unforgettable. “George brought something rare to his work a warmth that stayed with you long after you landed. That is a rare gift. All those who had the privilege of knowing him will remember him.

Karua also remembered all victims of the tragedy. “I also mourn the loss of the remaining passengers, whose names have not yet received official confirmation. Each of them was someone’s parent, child, sibling, or friend. Their families are in my thoughts and prayers.” She also extended sympathies to the family of MP Ng’eno, describing the MP as “a fierce defender of his constituents.

May all six rest in eternal peace. May their families find strength in the days ahead,” Karua concluded.
