TRUPHENA MUTHONI TARGETS NEW WORLD RECORD IN BRAZIL
Kenyan climate advocate Truphena Muthoni is preparing for another shot at global recognition, this time aiming to embrace1,172 trees within a single hour in Brazil.
The ambitious attempt was brought to the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, March 11, by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, who formally introduced Muthoni to fellow legislators.
According to the lawmaker, the environmental campaigner is scheduled to depart for Brazil on March 22, 2026, where her mission will include connecting with indigenous communities as part of her broader climate action work.
Mwenje explained that achieving the feat would require remarkable efficiency, with each embrace lasting approximately two to three seconds. Muthoni currently serves as an ambassador for the national 15-billion tree planting initiative, a role conferred upon her by President William Ruto.

The activist first captured public attention when she remained hugging a tree for 72 continuous hours in Nyeri County. Guinness World Records officially validated the achievement, confirming she had surpassed the previous mark of 48 hours a standard she herself had set earlier in 2025.
Since rising to prominence, Muthoni has become a recognised voice in environmental advocacy, championing reforestation efforts and the protection of indigenous tree species across Kenya.
The current world record for most trees hugged in one hour stands at 1,123, established by Ghana’s Abubakar Tahiru in Auburn, Alabama, USA, on March 25, 2024. Muthoni’s target of 1,172 would eclipse that figure by 49 trees.
