KENYAN SHORT FILM WATU WOTE NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR AWARD

Oscar nominations for the 90th annual awards were announce from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.

Kenyan short film Watu Wote has been nominated under Best Live Action Short Film alongside DeKalb Elementary, The Eleven O’Clock, My Nephew Emmett and The Silent Child.

The film is about Al-Shabaab Islamists who attacked a bus in Mandera County on December 21 2015 and Muslim bus passengers opposed the orders of the terrorists to protect non-Muslim passengers.

It stars Kenyan actors Charles Karumi, Justin Mirichii and Adelyne Wairimu. Somali-American actors know for their roles in Captain Philips movie, Barkhad Abdirahman, Faysal Ahmed and Abdiwali Farrah.

The film was produced 2016 in Kenya as graduation film of the Hamburg Media School’s Masterclass Programm, produced by Tobias Rosen and directed by Katja Benrath in exchange with talented Kenyan filmmakers Matrid Nyagah, Krysteen Savanne, Bramwel Iro, Alexander Ikawah and Brian Muene.

In October last year Watu Wote won the Gold Medal award at the 44th Student Academy Awards competition which took place at Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

This year the Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second time on March 4.
