WENDY KIMANI SPEAKS ON HER EXPERIENCE WITH COLOURISM IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

By  |

Actress and musician Wendy kimani shared her experience with colourism and the prejudice against those with darker skin.

Wendy took to social media and said, “I grew up with loads of insecurities because of being told I was too dark, too dark to model, too dark to wear bright colours, too dark to be pretty, too dark to be a singer, too dark to wear blue contact lenses argh the list is endless but I didn’t let that stop me.

Now I’m obsessed with how dark it is. I find it so unique and it’s all natural and mine! All mine! Someone needs to hear this! Our dark complexion is amazingly beautiful! Just like any other complexion! I know we haven’t heard this enough but I am telling you now. It is BE-AU-TI-FUL!

She also gave advice to people struggling to accept their skin, “Our light skinned friends, text your dark skinned friend and remind them how beautiful and amazing they are.

If you’re struggling with accepting the skin you are in, get up every morning and remember these three great things that we already know about our skin: Colours pop on our skin! The contrast is Mwahhh.

Our dark skin gives us extra protection from the sun. Dark don’t crack easy baby. Buuuut, to keep it that way don’t forget your SPF 50. We’ll be looking 25 when we’re 90. #youfeelme

Our dark complexion hides our blemishes. Remember that kapimple that shows up monthly, I’m sure you don’t even remember where it was once its gone right? See! #resetgamestrong

Because of how dark we are, our skin is glowier, our eyes look brighter, our teeth look whiter. I mean damn… are you feeling yourself yet? #thedarkertheberry”
