CHRIS KAIGA CALLS OUT SAFARICOM FOR USING ‘ZIMENICE’ AND ‘CHAIN CHAIN’ PHRASES WITHOUT HIS CONSENT OR PAYING HIM
Popular artist Chris Kaiga is not taking things lying down with telecom giant Safaricom. The “Zimenice” hitmaker alleges that Safaricom used his copyrighted phrases to promote their products.
In a social media rant, Chris shared several images of the contentious words used.
“It’s high time Safaricom got called out for infringing on my creative works! Less than a year ago they ran a campaign dubbed ‘Zimenice zangu zimenice na blaze by Safaricom’ which I hold the registered trademark and copyrights to the song,” he writes.
The singer adds, “Now Safaricom is running another campaign dubbed ‘Sms ziende chain chain’ without reference to me. Is this the arrogance of market dominance or just utter disrespect for Kenyan creatives? Something needs to be done.”
On their latest SMS campaign post, Safaricom’s latest ad reads “SMS Ziende Chain Chain“.
His song Zimenice had over 2.1 million on YouTube while Chain Chain has 1.8 million views.
In 2018, Safaricom was accused by Nonini for using his lyric “Gigagagaga‘ to promote their 1GB bundle without his consent. Nonini later dropped the accusations against Safaricom after he was appointed their brand ambassador for a period of six months.
