VIOJA MAHAKAMANI JUDGE LUCY WANGUI TALKS WORKING WITH HOLLYWOOD MOVIE SETS FOR OUT OF AFRICA & SHEENA QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE
Veteran actress Lucy Wangui popularly known for her role as the Judge in Vioja Mahakamani has opened up about her journey in acting.
Wangui says she was working in a bakery before she got her big break in KBC, “I was born in Ziwani, Kariakor and back then parents didn’t want their children to be actors. I got my first job with Elliots Bakery, the only bakery which was making bread in Kenya.
Our neighbour the late Elizabeth Akinyi was a broadcaster in VOK, in the 70s and working in a TV station was hard. In the estate there was a public TV where I used to go and watch my favourite TV programme Mzee Pembe, I used to love the way they acted and I would tell Elizabeth to take me to VOK to act and she would laugh and ignore me.
But I insisted until one day she agreed to take me for a tour, I saw the studios, met Mzee Pembe and I told him I would like to act in his show, he told me if there is role I would be called. After a month, I was called and given a role.
I acted so well and they kept calling me and when they started a new show Kivunja Mbavu, I was part of the cast that’s when Mzee Ojwang joined. I became popular and any programme that was started I was given a role.”
Lucy also worked on international movie sets for films shot in Kenya, “When international movies were being shot in Kenya, I worked with them. I did the wardrobe for Out of Africa, Quest for Fire, Savage Harvest and Sheena Queen of the Jungle I was one of the actors. When you would here there is a movie being shot in Kenya, I just knew I’m there.”
