EMBASSY OF INDONESIA HOSTS IFTAR IN MOMBASA
The Embassy of Indonesia in Nairobi recently visited Mombasa, a historic city on the east coast of Africa renowned for its pivotal role in the spread of Islam in the region. The visit served as an opportunity to strengthen bonds with the Indonesian community residing in Mombasa and to explore the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
As Kenya’s oldest port city, Mombasa has long been a hub of trade and cultural exchange. It holds significant historical importance as a gateway for the introduction of Islam to East Africa, blending influences from the Middle East, Asia, and local traditions. These diverse cultural interactions are still evident in Mombasa’s social and cultural fabric, making it a city with a strong Islamic heritage.
Approximately 30 Indonesian citizens live in Mombasa, working in various professions, including private sector roles, ship crews, and some who have married Kenyan citizens. To foster unity and solidarity among the Indonesian community, the Indonesian Embassy in Nairobi organized a breaking of the fast (iftar) event during their visit. This gathering not only strengthened friendships but also demonstrated the Embassy’s commitment to supporting Indonesians living abroad.

During their stay, the Embassy delegation also visited the historic Mandhry Mosque, an iconic symbol of Islam’s development in the region. Built in the 16th century, the Mandhry Mosque is one of Kenya’s oldest mosques and a masterpiece of classical Swahili Islamic architecture. Located in Mombasa’s Old Town, the mosque is renowned for its distinctive minaret and intricate wood carvings, showcasing the artistic and cultural expertise of the East African Muslim community. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a center for religious and social activities, preserving Islamic traditions in Mombasa.
Danny Rahdiansyah, Chargé d’Affaires Ad Interim of the Republic of Indonesia in Kenya, expressed his appreciation for the enthusiasm and unity of the Indonesian community in Mombasa. He reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to providing services and protection to all Indonesian citizens across its accredited countries.
Wisnu Lombardwinanto, Coordinator of the Information and Socio-Cultural Function at the Indonesian Embassy in Nairobi, highlighted the importance of the visit in strengthening the relationship between the Embassy and the Indonesian diaspora in Mombasa. He emphasised that such activities help reinforce the cultural and historical ties between Indonesia and Kenya, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.
