Popular actor Keith Chuaga spoke about his modelling journey and being among the first light-skinned models in Kenya. Speaking in an interview with Buzz Central’s Cheptoek Boyo, the Ma’Empress actor disclosed that he was working as a conductor in Nyeri before trying modelling . Chuaga said he traced a popular model who had been featured on a local newspaper to ask him how he could be a model.

I was working as a conductor and one day while at home I saw a magazine with a model called Jude Sande who had a shop in Westlands. I read the newspaper about him and kept the page with me and I decided to come to Nairobi to look for him at his shop, told him my story. I gave him the newspaper cutting and he was very gracious,” he said.

The actor also talked about his acting journey saying it was not easy, “The start was hard, I would work without getting paid. There was a guy who called me all the way from Nyeri, I got the first bus to Nairobi. I borrowed my parents the bus fare and when I got to town, the person I was communicating with switched off his phone but his colleague asked me to go on set. I asked about payments but they convinced me to work first. At 5pm when people were being paid, I was given Sh800 which could only pay for my fare back home,” Chuaga recalled.

Chuaga also explained how he got to star in Nadia Mukami’s music video. “I was called to do the role although I had never done music videos in the past but I remember talking with Nadia and she told me Kenyans relate well with the character I was to play. She told me the story line and she later sent me the song. I liked it, I talked with my team and we decided to shoot the video,” he stated
