The Penalty, a new Kenyan stage production written by Simiyu Barasa, directed by Ted Munene and produced by Estar Kahuha, will be staged at the Kenya National Theatre on Sunday, 8 November 2026, at 2:30 PM as part of KITFest 2026.

Set in the world of Kenyan football, the play follows the contested legacy of Musa “Baba” Muthee, a legendary footballer whose public image clashes with the memories of his two estranged sons. As a stadium prepares to honour Musa, Johnnie, an investigative journalist, arrives determined to expose the truth behind the national myth, while Tom, the elder son, has spent years protecting his father’s reputation. Then Musa appears not as a memory, but as a ghost confronting the people and events that shaped his life.

The cast includes Justin Mirichii as Musa “Baba” Muthee, Nick Ndeda as Tom Muthee, Charlie Gachanja as Johnnie Muthee, Arthur Sanya as Coach Mulee and Sky Kahuha as Mark.

Blending family drama, humour, psychological tension and magical realism, The Penalty examines fatherhood, masculinity, sacrifice, emotional absence and the legacies passed between generations. Beyond football, it asks whether providing for the people we love can become a substitute for being present, and how a nation should remember its heroes when the private truth is more complicated than the public story.

The production also offers an allegory of Kenya’s political landscape, exploring how a country chooses its heroes and what happens when the achievements it celebrates are inseparable from the compromises it would rather forget.
