Standard Media Group has issued a formal apology following the publication of an inappropriate headline that contained an ethnic slur in reference to the crowning of Miss Universe Kenya 2025, Jean Ojiro.

The offensive headline appeared in an article published on The Standard website on July 27, 2026. According to the media house, the lapse occurred due to an error in judgment by a staff member.

Upon being flagged, The Standard confirmed that the headline was immediately removed from the platform. In a statement released to the public, the Group detailed that internal protocols have since been activated to review the incident, address the editorial breach, and reinforce safeguards to ensure such an error does not recur.

The Standard Group Plc sincerely apologises to our readers, to Jean Ojiro, and to the Miss Universe Kenya organisation,” the statement read. The Group further reaffirmed its “commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical journalism.”
