ADDRESSING RACISM IN KENYA: KHALIGRAPH JONES & SHIKSHA ARORA CALL OUT LANDLORDS WITH INDIAN ONLY APARTMENTS AND HOUSES

By  |

Anger and heartbreak have swept across the world over the killing of yet another black man at the hands of police.

Locally more than one dozen people have been killed by police during a dusk to dawn curfew to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) said on Tuesday.

Musician Khaligraph Jones wants the issues of racism to be addressed specifically Kenyan Indian landlords who only rent their houses to fellow Indians and not any other race, “While we are addressing racism in Kenya can someone address the Indians only apartments and houses in Westlands and Langata?” he posted on social media.

Adding, “Last year I went to Langata to inquire about some Nice houses I had seen on the Internet, after getting there we were prevented from Entering the Estate cause we were told we aren’t Indians, apparently only Indians can own property in That Area, Niljua Ni mazishi Nikarudi Kayole pole pole. The OG was not respected.”

TV presenter Shiksha Arora affirmed what Khaligraph said, “Many Kenyan Indian landlords especially in Langata and Parklands would rather leave their units empty rather than rent to certain ethnic groups. The most common excuse is ‘This house is limited to vegetarians only.’ Those posting #blacklivesmatter can you look inward first?

The most common excuse given by the watchman when waiting to view the house is ‘this house is limited to vegetarians only.’ Kenyan Indians who own residential properties are known to have had individuals turned away based on their ethnicity and I’ve personally seen Kenyans sharing such stories over the years.

There’s a lot of hypocrisy around this. Why call out racism in America by posting a black square while practicing anti-blackness in your own country? Don’t live comfortably in your gated communities and ignore the racism and racial discrimination exists within our inner circle. Don’t turn a blind eye to such cases. Its time we call such people out.
