SHIKSHA ARORA EXPLAINS WHY SOME ESTATES ARE EXCLUSIVELY OCCUPIED BY INDIANS
Content creator Shiksha Arora has explained why certain residential estates in Lang’ata and Westlands are predominantly occupied by Kenyan-Indians, stating that its is a lifestyle preference and not racial exclusion.
Speaking on the Mic Cheque Podcast, Arora addressed what she described as a common misconception about those neighbourhoods. She said that the clustering is largely a result of strict vegetarian practices observed by many within the Asian community.
“Some of those places, it is not a matter of race but vegetarianism,” Arora explained during the podcast. “They are very big on the food they eat. They don’t even eat garlic and onions, they are not allowed. No meat and eggs for them. The smell gets to them, and that’s how they have grown up.”
She recalled instances with vegetarian friends where the mere presence of meat at a dining table would provoke a reaction. “I had friends who were vegetarian that if we would sit on the table and a dish comes, they would feel like throwing up,” she said. “The smell of meat makes them throw up. Vegetarianism is big in the Asian community.”
She further noted that the concentration is also a product of established community infrastructure. Groups such as the Bohra Muslims, who have created self-sufficient enclaves complete with their own schools, hospitals, and residential estates. “The Bohras are Muslim, and they have a community of their own. They have schools, hospitals, and estates,” she said.
