THE NAIROBI HOSPITAL SUSPENDS CONTROVERSIAL PRICE HIKES
In a last-minute decision, The Nairobi Hospital has suspended its planned price increases that were scheduled to take effect today, August 12.
The move comes after a tense standoff with major insurance providers, who had collectively withdrawn coverage from the hospital in protest of the steep rate adjustments. The crisis reached a tipping point when eight leading insurers including Madison Insurance, First Assurance, Minet, Old Mutual, Britam, AAR, CIC, and Pacis Insurance suspended services after unsuccessful negotiations with hospital management.
The insurers had objected to some price hikes that soared as high as 61 percent for critical medical services. Hospital CEO Felix Osano confirmed the suspension of the new pricing structure, stating, “Following a productive strategic meeting held today with key insurance providers, The Nairobi Hospital has agreed to suspend the implementation of its recently announced price review, effective immediately.“
The controversial increases, initially rolled out on July 30, had sparked outrage across the healthcare sector. Among the most dramatic adjustments were Pap smear and HPV test costs jumping from Sh5,000 to Sh16,000, CT scans priced at Sh30,000, and ICU daily rates set at Sh45,000.
Industry sources revealed that insurers had made repeated attempts to negotiate a more sustainable pricing model with hospital management before taking the drastic step of suspending coverage.
