Team Kenya Unveils Ceremonial Kit for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Team Kenya has officially unveiled its ceremonial attire for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with a design that pays homage to the nation’s rich athletics heritage and the champions who have defined its sporting identity.

The outfit, dominated by green and gold, draws inspiration from the forests of Kaptagat, Iten, and the wider Rift Valley landscapes regions that have become synonymous with Kenya’s dominance in distance running and the production of world-class athletes.

“The striking gold detailing at the bottom of the coats draws inspiration from the tracks that have witnessed our greatest triumphs. Once beneath our feet, those golden lanes now form part of what we wear, symbolising the sweat, sacrifice and excellence that have defined Kenya. We now wear our golden tracks, boldly!” team Kenya said in a statement.

For the women’s ensemble, the green and gold attire honours Sabina Chebichi, the first Kenyan woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal. Affectionately known as the “Petticoat Princess,” she made history at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, after famously competing barefoot while wearing a petticoat.

“For our women, the Green and Gold ensemble honours Sabina Chebichi, the first Kenyan woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal… now women are dignified, and we’re stepping out boldly in style!” Team Kenya added.

For the men’s design, the gold detailing commemorates one of the most iconic moments in Kenya’s sprinting history, Ferdinand Omanyala’s gold medal victory in the men’s 100 metres at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The win ended a six-decade drought dating back to Seraphino Antao’s historic triumph in 1962.

“For our men, the gold celebrates one of the most iconic moments in Kenya’s sprinting history. It commemorates the 60-year drought of the men’s 100m gold medals from Seraphino Antao’s historic victory in 1962 to Ferdinand Omanyala’s triumphant win in 2022.”

Team Kenya described the ceremonial attire as more than just fashion, calling it a tribute to the nation’s sporting journey. “Every thread tells a story. Every colour carries history. Green for our roots, Gold for our greatness.“
