Chebet Ronoh Explains The Realization That Led Her to De-Center Romantic Relationships
Kenyan content creator and media personality Chebet Ronoh has opened up about the realisation that led her to de-center romantic relationships.
In a candid reflection, Ronoh explained that witnessing women who seemingly had everything, “the body, looks and money” still being treated with disrespect was a turning point. “I was like no, this ain’t it,” she said.
But it was the experiences of women in her own life that cemented her perspective. Ronoh described watching women who “did everything right, who followed the bible, respected themselves and waited upon the lord for the right man” and still found themselves “played with.” “If it can happen to them then surely it’s a systemic issue,” she said. “It’s a lie we were being sold. How it is portrayed and the outcome in reality is not the same.“
Rather than continue “going through the fire and hoping self control and ability of someone else,” Ronoh said she made a deliberate pivot: betting on herself and her own intuition. “The more I practice pattern recognition I save myself from a lot of fires,” she said.
In recent months, she has spoken about taking a “cold turkey” break from people, alcohol, sex, and dating to confront what she described as an addiction to “overfunctioning” in relationships, “always sorting the bill, curating the space, being nice to abusive people to stay connected” .
