Gengetone rap group, Mbogi Genje, have arguably the toughest sheng in Nairobi but that hasn’t stopped them from making it big. They’ve churned out big tunes such as “Kidungi” and “Kamkoba” which have gone on to score over 1 million views on YouTube. Now, Sonko is throwing his weight behind them.

The Nairobi Governor announced, via his social media pages, that he’ll be backing the 3-man band from Umoja.

Sonko met the group in his usual flashy offices and style. He wrote, “In keeping with my commitment to support our artists and nurture talent in Nairobi especially during the hard times occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, today I hosted the Mbogi Genje music group.

The group currently has written 10 new songs, and I will support the production of all them. I will also provide them with a brand-new Mac Book Pro to help them in editing their work, before setting up a fully equipped recording studio for them.”

He added, “To ensure sustainability, I will facilitate them to establish an operating base in their neighbourhood, while utilizing my networks to help them secure corporate and private gigs where they will be earning.”

Sonko also talked about more long-term solutions for artists writing, “For a long-term solution, my administration will sponsor a Talent Incubation and Development Bill to enable the County set aside funds to support the diverse talents across Nairobi.”

Mbogi Genje were elated, and took to their Instagram page, announcing the news to their fans writing, “We thank God for this great day with Governor Mike Sonko. We don’t have much to say but happiness on how he is supporting artists on both sides of the country.

He promised to aid us on music equipment and support us on our daily music. May God bless you always.”
