Popular Kikuyu benga artiste, Albert Gacheru, known for his hit song Mwendwa wakwa Mariru is died, aged 59. Gacheru has been in the ICU for the last two months and died last night at Kenyatta National Hospital.

He dedicated his entire life to fighting music piracy. He even enrolled in law school so he is better equipped to fighting for music copyrights. He served at the Music Copyright Society of Kenya with utmost dedication. In the 11th parliament when I chaired a sub-committee of the ICT Committee to review the plight of our artists, he made a very passionate case for protecting local music.

Now the Mariru hero Albert Gacheru Muru wa Wairimu is gone. Today he will perform Mariru in heaven flanked by Kamaru, Jimmy Githinji Wayunny, Ndemethiu, Murimi wa Kahalf, Salim Junior, Mighty Salim with special appearances by Mother and Son, Julia Lucy and Mercy wa Ciama. Rest in Peace Wamaitu,” said politician Moses Kuria.
