Actress and casting agent Nini Wacera opened up about procuring an abortion.

Speaking with Parents Magazine, the mother of one said she discovered she was pregnant at age 19 and due to lack of support form her family, she could not keep the baby. “I feel  like it’s one experience in my life that ripped me to the core of my soul because it was traumatic. That abortion took like the whole day. They put a pill in me and a nurse would come in occasionally and roughly do an examination. After all, you are the loose girl who had sex with your boyfriend and got pregnantI went home, got into bed and never came out of my room.”

The 44 year old said the incident was never discussed, something she blames on the conservative nature of her family. It was only after she attempted suiced that her mother intervened and even after the intervention she did not get the necessary counselling.

Though the topic of sex is still considered a taboo in Kenya, Nini believes not talking about sex openly is a mistake that she wants to correct. “Sex positivity teaches people how to appreciate sex with a positive mind. It’s also about teaching consent. When I was sexually molested as a child, I couldn’t tell my mum about it because sex was not spoken about, it was a taboo.”

She also said going to therapy has helped her, “I have been doing therapy on and off for the last 15 years. When I am on a high in my career, I do therapy. When I fall into a dark cloud of depression, I go for therapy.”
