A piece of Kenya’s recent political history has been brought back to life. Raila Odinga Jr., son of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has completed a full restoration of the iconic Hummer H3 that once symbolised his father’s fiery bid for the presidency.

The vehicle, originally gifted to the elder Odinga by businessman Don Bosco Gichana ahead of the turbulent 2007 elections, was a familiar sight at political rallies and amid the post-election unrest that followed. After Odinga’s passing in October 2025, the Hummer had fallen into a state of disrepair. Now, following an extensive restoration, the vehicle has been returned to its former glory.

In a social media post showcasing before-and-after photos and a video of the revived machine, Raila Jr. detailed the transformation. The Hummer now boasts its original maroon paint, fresh all-terrain tires, and polished chrome trim a stark contrast to its previously weathered condition. “A story of restoration,” Raila Jr. wrote. “My initial idea was to take it directly to the museum. However, I would like Kenyans to interact with it before I do.

The restored Hummer will be placed on temporary public display before its final journey to the family mausoleum in Siaya County. There, it will join preserved independence-era artifacts, taking its place among the tangible memories honouring the late opposition leader’s enduring legacy.
