‘HE WASN’T A GOOD FATHER’ ADELLE ONYANGO REVEALS

By  |

Renowned Kenyan media personality and activist Adelle Onyango has opened up about her personal journey of confronting unprocessed emotions surrounding the loss of her father, 17 years since his passing.

In a post shared on her social media platforms, Adelle talked about the complexity of her relationship with her late father, acknowledging his shortcomings as a husband and father.

Adelle said that it is possible to love someone fiercely while also holding them accountable for their actions. “Today marks 17 years since his passing. I used to think there was nothing to process there. He wasn’t the best husband and in turn not a good father on many occasions. You can feel hurt and still grieve them,” she shares. “You can regret words unsaid but not live in the past. Many truths can coexist.”

She recounts a recent conversation with someone who knew her father for an extended period, “I recently had a convo with someone who knew my dad for much longer than me and he shared some really kind things my dad had done. I’m grateful they added tons of things to my memory of him.”

Adelle offers words of encouragement to those dealing with similar emotions: “If you have unprocessed feelings about a parent, ignoring them doesn’t work lol. Confronting them won’t break you; in fact, it’ll gift you freedom.”
