ADELLE ONYANGO LAUDS MUKOMA NGUGI FOR SPEAKING OUT AGAINST FATHER’S ABUSE

Media personality and activist, Adelle Onyango, has publicly commended Mukoma Ngugi for his bravery in speaking out against his father, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o’s domestic abuse.

In a recent social media post, Onyango praised Mukoma for breaking the silence surrounding his father’s violent behaviour. “So proud of Mukoma for breaking the silence on his father’s violent ways. The immediate reaction is a testament on how society will do literal backflips to defend abusers. Yes I too, celebrated Ngugi and his works before knowing this. But now I know better, my support gets withdrawn. It’s really that simple. I don’t know why we have to debate this,” Adelle wrote.

In early March 2024, Mukoma shared his personal story of witnessing domestic violence in his family. In a candid statement, he revealed the painful memories of his late mother enduring physical abuse at the hands of his fatherMukoma recounted the distressing scenes from his childhood of how his father would subject his mother to violent attacks.

He vividly remembers visiting his mother at his grandmother’s home, where she sought refuge from the abuse. “My father physically abused my late mother – he would beat her up. Some of my earliest memories are me going to visit her at my grandmother’s where she would seek refuge. But with that said it is the silencing of who she was that gets me.  Ok- I have said it.” He wrote.
