The Nairobi City County government has given the public a seven-day window to claim 473 unclaimed bodies currently held at the Nairobi Funeral Home, previously known as the City Mortuary

According to a notice from the County’s Department of Health, Nutrition, and Wellness, the deceased have been kept at the facility since their admission dates and are awaiting collection by relatives or acquaintances. The county is urging family members, friends, and the general public to review the released list for possible identification.

The appeal is made under the provisions of the Public Health Act (Cap 242) and the Public Health (Public Mortuaries) Rules of 1991. Authorities have cautioned that if the bodies are not identified and collected within the stipulated week, the county will move to obtain legal permission for their disposal. The official notice, dated March 18, 2026, specifies that the causes of death range from natural causes and accidents to drowning, suspected murder and mob violence.

The announcement follows a similar announcement from the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in March, which called for the collection of 480 unclaimed bodies including 102 adults and 378 children from its Farewell Home.
