Fairy Tale Love: Winnie Odinga Reveals Why She is Not Married
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has revealed why marriage has not been a priority and how her close bond with her late father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, shaped the choices she made.
In a recent interview with journalist Edmund Obilo on State Affairs, Winnie addressed long-running questions about her relationship status, describing herself as someone who still believes in the institution of marriage but through what she called a “fairy tale” lens. “I think I am married to my work. I believe in marriage more in the fairy tale style of it, find somebody you like, and I’ve just not found that person yet,” she said .
She explained that she grew up in a generation exposed to stories of lifelong romance and still holds on to that ideal . She stated that marriage is something she would want to approach with considerable time.
For much of her adult life, Winnie’s work and public identity were closely tied to her father, the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. She served as his private secretary, confidante, and close aide, accompanying him during political campaigns and major public engagements .
She said that closeness came at a personal cost, “My father was like the planet Jupiter; when you’re in his orbit, you’re sucked in. And because I had the privileged position of being his private secretary, his confidante, and his daughter, essentially I had to take care of him at the expense of many things that I may have wanted,” she explained.
