Musician Mutoriah Reflects on Investing KSh 800,000 in Orchestra Debut That Earned him KSh 4,000

Kenyan musician Mutoriah has opened up about the financial realities behind his first orchestral show, revealing that the production cost KSh 800,000 while ticket sales ultimately earned him just KSh 4,000.

Speaking about the experience in a podcast interview, the musician explained that the entire budget was funded through ticketing, with tickets priced at KSh 5,000. He credited Twitter with driving much of the sales momentum, noting that while the price initially drew criticism, many fans recognised the show as a unique experience worth the investment.

“We had booked a small venue with a 200 capacity, but by the time we looked at tickets, demand had pushed it to 250, so we ended up changing to a Museum, which increased our costs,” Mutoriah said.

“We eventually sold 300 tickets and ended up making KSh 4,000 from that gig. But the thing is, we were investing to pay later, so I really didn’t mind. I didn’t have a problem with it.”

Mutoriah views the inaugural show as a foundation-building exercise rather than a loss. The artist is now preparing for a far more ambitious follow-up, with a projected budget of KSh 3 million for this year’s orchestra production.
