POLYCARP OPENS UP ON RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS DAD AND HOW HE FOUND OUT HIS WIFE WAS EXPECTING

Sauti Sol’s Polycarp Otieno has disclosed how they discovered they were pregnant. The musician said they decided to do a test after suspecting that his wife, Lady Mandy was expecting.

Polycarp said they did the test on Christmas Day, “On Christmas Day 2019, we did the test and discovered that we were pregnant. I had suspected and we waited until the evening of Christmas, just to make it special and I remember this gush of happiness and a lot of expectations, anxiety as well that I was going to be a father. It was a mix of very many emotions but the overriding emotion was just happiness and feeling this love that I’ve never felt before for a human being that I’ve never met,” he said.

The musician who doubles up as a guitarist also opened up on some of his childhood struggles, speaking of an instance where his dad lost his job of 14 years. “I remember when he was retrenched from his job of 14 years. He used to work for Philips and they just had a massive retrenchment and they were all released. During that time, my dad was the main breadwinner of the home and he was very keen on education. He use to take us to schools that he could barely afford but in his head those were the best schools and now when he was retrenched I got to a point where I saw a lot of sadness and I’d never seen that side of him before and he still tried his level best to for us to continue going to school, Polycarp said.

Polycarp said following the retrenchment, his mother who was a small scale trader at the time had to step in, “I saw a big shift in how he started behaving even at home because he was the one at home almost all the time and my mum now had to step up in a way but she had to be the one digging deep and try to get for us to survive,” he said.

The guitarist also spoke on how he tried to improve his relationship with his dad following a series of mentorship at his school. “The school that I went to had tutors and mentors and every student had a mentor that was assigned to a certain teacher and they would pick you any time during class and you would open up to them and talk to them. At the same time you want that same feeling when you get back home, your connection with your father is not to that level and so you feel some sort of distance and being misunderstood,” Polycarp said.

He stated that he later sat down with his dad on the same but he laughed it off.” After high school I sat him down and I told him I would like our relationship to change because I don’t want to live in fear anymore and he laughed it off but after then everything changed. He was more present, even when I picked the guitar he was very supportive as much as he was very keen on education,” Polycarp said.
