‘I WAS DEPRESSED’ WINNIE BWIRE ON BEING A STEPMUM

By  |

Actress Winnie Bwire alias Dida has talked about her marriage to actor Dan Sonko. Speaking to Cheptoek Boyo on Buzz Central, the actress said she was not friends with his late wife Druscillah Walowe popularly known as Dru, “I was not friends with Dan’s wife Dru, I knew Dan before he met his wife Dru through Little Theatre Club we were casted in the same projects. We never saw each other in a romantic way. When he got married he introduced me to his wife, I met her once if not twice in this lifetime.”

The Sultana actress disclosed Dan was in other relationships before dating and later marrying her, “When his wife was sick, I remember telling my mom, our friend’s wife was admitted and she needed blood. My mom was like, I will pray for her. The next thing we heard she died. After his wife passed away, he saw two or three other people, he was in a relationship that was not working.

I was giving him advice on things to go and do with her. In that space, we found a friendship and we became so close. We started spending time with each other and getting to know each other. We ended up liking each other. When we started seeing each other he was still battling so many things. He had not mourned the death of Dru properly and I think he dived into relationships too fast.”

Bwire also said it was hard being a step mom of two boys, “Parenting has taught me patience. Kids have given me character development. Because at the end of the day, as much as I’m finding myself as a mum, I’ve had to learn how to coexist and how to address the issues that crop up. I went to bed as a single woman then the following day I woke up a mum.

I was even depressed for a little bit. I was shocked because I was learning everything at once. I had no preparation, I was dealing with tantrums, night fevers and the backlash from social media. There were just so many things going on and I was overwhelmed. But I got some rhythm after a while. The kids were already my friends. So I was like, if I don’t know how to be a mom, I will approach them from a friendly space.”
