The state has moved forward with murder charges against students accused of starting the fire that devastated Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County, resulting in the deaths of 16 pupils.

On Tuesday, the Director of Public Prosecutions announced it had cleared the path for prosecution after a thorough review of the investigative file from the DCI regarding the May 28 blaze

Upon careful assessment of the evidence, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved charges against the implicated students. The persons of interest will face sixteen (16) counts of murder arising from the incident,” the statement read.

Amidst growing public anxiety over school safety, the DPP highlighted a disturbing pattern of arson plaguing educational institutions across the nation. The office said that accountability is non-negotiable, reminding both students and citizens that criminal acts will be met with strict legal action.

The DPP assured the public of its commitment to a fair and evidence-based judicial process. The office also reinforced its duty to safeguard the rule of law and ensure that justice prevails where wrongdoing is established. The accused individuals will be arraigned in court in the coming days.
