Alfred Mutua Earns Private Pilot License, Logs Over 300 Flight Hours

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua has announced a remarkable personal achievement: he is now a licensed pilot, having turned a childhood fantasy into a sky-high reality. Dr. Mutua has officially earned his Private Pilot License (PPL) and has logged over 300 hours of flight time, a journey he undertook with a small flying school at Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.

The CS’s journey to the cockpit began decades ago, not in a lavish setting, but as a young, poor boy in Riruta Satellite. He would sit outside his family’s wooden shack, gazing at the planes overhead. At just nine years old, a simple thought turned into a lifelong ambition.

I wanted to fly one day not as a passenger but as a pilot,” Dr. Mutua shared. His fascination was further cemented during a class trip to Wilson Airport, where he was mesmerised by the aircraft engines and cockpits, and later by a book he found at the Kenya National Library detailing the history of flight, from the Wright brothers to modern jets.

The dream followed him to the United States, where he took a job at Spokane, Washington Airport to be near planes while pursuing his communication career. However, the demands of life family, children, career, no time, not enough money” put the ambition on hold for many years.

Determined to transform his long-held dream into reality, Dr. Mutua enrolled at Ninety Nine’s Flying School at Wilson Airport in 2023. Balancing a demanding career with his studies, he spent sleepless nights studying and weekends flying. Six months into his training, he undertook his first solo flight in Malindi. Seven months from the day he started his classes, he passed his tests and received his Private Pilot License.

Since obtaining his license, Dr. Mutua has continued to build his flying hours with 99s Flying School and the Kenya Aeronautical College, training on various aircraft in Kenya and South Africa. Today, he flies almost every weekend.

To inspire others, Dr. Mutua has launched a dedicated YouTube channel to share his flying adventures, with new episodes every Thursday and Saturday. “My dream as a young, poor boy had become a reality. I have been recording my flying adventures and now want to share them with all so that every dreaming boy or girl is encouraged – to know that with God, determination and planning, everything is possible,” Dr. Mutua said .
