Senator Gloria Orwoba has called for an investigation into X (formerly Twitter), citing its role in spreading misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech.
“Back in Kenya, abuse of social media including X to spread misinformation, disinformation and hate speech continues to be of concern with the proliferation of the internet and social media in the country,” she said.
Speaking at the Senate, she raised concerns over the platform, owned by Elon Musk, being used for cyberbullying and privacy violations. She referenced Brazil’s recent suspension of X for defying court orders to remove harmful content, noting that similar misuse is rampant in Kenya.
“Social media has been used to attack innocent persons including revealing critical information of the victims in violation of the Data Protection Act. This worrying trend should be dealt with urgently to deter perpetrators.“
She highlighted the danger of social media revealing personal information in violation of the Data Protection Act and urged swift action to address this trend. The senator also sought clarity from the Standing Committee on ICT regarding the measures taken by the Communications Authority of Kenya and the Data Protection Commissioner to ensure X complies with the country’s laws.
