President William Ruto has send his condolences to the family of gospel singer Rachel Wendeto, who passed away from her injuries after suffering burns over 70 percent of her body.

She had been battling for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital following the assault, in which attackers poured fuel on her and set her ablaze in Nairobi’s Mwiki area.

In an official statement, President Ruto condemned the growing trend of political violence and intimidation targeting civilians, “May the Almighty give Ms. Rachel Wandeto’s family and friends comfort, peace, and the strength to endure this loss,Ruto stated. “Those criminals who attacked this hardworking and promising young woman will be brought to justice, regardless of who they are affiliated with.”

He also warned that violent and threatening behaviour endangers democratic rights, “There is no space in Kenya for political intolerance that restricts free speech or association. Such actions threaten the stability of our democracy.”

News of Wandeto’s death was shared by her colleague in the music industry, Karangu Muraya, “A great soul has rested… Rest in peace, Rachel Wandeto,” he wrote.
