The Fisherman Experience, held in Kisumu, delivered three days of creativity, education and entertainment. The event kicked off on Wednesday and Thursday with activities tailored for young creatives, culminating in a major concert at Mamboleo Stadium on Saturday.

Wednesday’s sessions featured masterclasses led by artists and industry experts, focusing on the business side of creativity. Topics included financial management, handling inconsistent income, tax obligations, investments, personal branding, digital music and earning from creative work. Participants also learned about securing credit and funding to support their ventures.

Thursday shifted focus to civic engagement and advocacy, with conversations around constitutional rights, freedom of expression, copyright issues, fair contracts, and youth involvement in governance. Voter education sessions also encouraged young people to use their creative platforms to engage in civic matters.

“We believe in the potential of young people and the creative sector to unite Kenyans. Our support extends beyond performances because we see the talent, skills, and dedication behind every creative effort. Through the platforms we provide, we help young creatives sharpen their abilities, share their voices, and turn their passions into real opportunities,” said Zizwe Awuor, Director of Brand, Marketing, and Insights at Safaricom.

At the heart of the concert was a celebration of Kenyan music and the artists shaping the country’s cultural landscape. The performances gave artists an opportunity to connect directly with their audiences while giving fans a space to enjoy local talent and celebrate their culture.

“The experience was exciting because it brought people together and gave us a chance to enjoy Kenyan music and our own artists. It was good to see so much energy from the young people and to be part of an event that celebrated our culture,” said Collins Ochieng.

The Fisherman Experience is part of Safaricom’s wider efforts to support Kenya’s creative economy.
